DNR Ride | May 31st 6:00PM

It’s looking like a great evening for a ride! We’re using last year’s route, with a slight modification to avoid the busy stretch of Downey Rd. This detour will involve a brief dismount and hike to get safely to Forestall Rd. Critical cross-training!!

These DNR rides are for those of us soon-to-be 60 and older. Route distances are selected to get us to the bar before our glaucoma starts to take affect. But bringing lights is always a good idea, just in case.

Special Note: We are starting (and ending) at Fixed Gear Brewing Canteen, how convenient! Some free beer and pizza for those who make it to the end!

Load the route on your bike computer if you have one, here’s how.

The Speed Groups on this ride are TBD based on the diversity of those who show up.

Women Only Ride | May 24 6:30PM

The first GCC WOR of 2023 is here!! Tonight’s route is a classic that takes us through Eden Mills before making our way south to Sideroad 10 and looping back to Arkell via Second and First Line. The weather is looking promising and on the cooler side.

Women only rides will run on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month. It is intended to foster a supportive and safe riding culture where women can help women grow in the sport of cycling. The speed and length of this ride may vary to suit those that show up. When there is a larger turnout, the ride may divide into two speed groups. The GCC is keen for the women’s ride to grow as more participants and ride leaders become available.

Wednesday Gravel Ride | August 31st 6:00pm

We said we were done with these, but the crowd cried out for more… you asked for it, you got it!

The limiting factor is that the sun sets at 7:57 pm… we can make that work!

The weather is looking ideal for a gravel ride. Bringing lights is always a good idea.

Final 2022 Women Only Ride & Social | Aug 24th 6:00PM

What happened?? This is our last GCC Women’s Ride for 2022, and we will mourn the occasion by finishing (and starting) at the Fixed Gear Canteen, where, thanks to the OCA and ON Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture, we will enjoy some post-ride pizza and refreshments. We have the most female GCC members in the history of the club, a great cause for celebration!

The Canteen is located at 5 Edinburgh Rd S. Bring some post-ride clothes if you wish, and we will lock them in somebody’s car. The route is fairly short so that we get back to the Canteen in good time. There is some gravel, but it’s nicely hard-packed. The main group will ride at an R5-ish pace; if you want to ride faster, be sure to load the route on your device, here’s how!

Wednesday Gravel Ride | August 17th 6:00PM

RIDE IS ON!

WEATHER UPDATE: Weather is doing what we predicted just a bit slow. We may delay start for 15 minutes or so. LC

It looks like a small storm cell should hit Guelph shortly after 5pm just past the deadline to cancel, but it looks clear behind that. There are no EC Weather ‘Warnings’ or ‘Watches’, so we are not mandated to cancel. Are we guaranteeing a perfectly dry ride? No. But if we do get some precip, it shouldn’t be too much for too long. The weather system is drifting to the south and we are heading to the north. Last one of the year, let’s do this! 🙂

HOWEVER: If EC does issue a storm ‘Warning’ then ride is officially cancelled, but may still go ahead ‘unofficially’ with discretion. Check back here and I’ll keep posting details right up to 5:45 pm.

The last weeknight gravel ride of the season!

UPDATE: Ride is officially and completely cancelled… The TORNADO Warning that was just issued is the icing on the cake. We don’t recommend anyone going out. We do need the rain… pretty sure we don’t need the tornado.

We’re going north! This route takes us through some old and familiar territory we haven’t visited for a while. There is a possibility of some precipitation. Check back here for weather cancellation posted no less than one hour before the ride begins. We’re looking forward to seeing you soon!

Wednesday 20th, 2022. 6:30 PM GRAVEL RIDE!!!

RIDE CANCELLED. Sorry everybody but the weather radar looks unfavorable and nobody wants to ride with half a kilogram stone dust in their shorts if it can be avoided. So the weather forecast is a bit iffy for this ride. Hopefully it works out but to be honest, we certainly could use the rain… The final call will be made by 5:30 PM. Anyway, the route is likely familiar to most people and a pleasant mix of rail trail, quiet roads and gravel. See you there!

Women Only Ride | July 13 6:30PM

WEATHER UPDATE: RIDE IS ON. Our bums may be soggy but the radar looks clear (and the radar is always reliable…right??) Don’t forget to download the amended route if you haven’t already.

IMPORTANT PLEASE READ! In order to accommodate the route for this week (designed by route master Meg Thorburn), we will start the women’s ride at the EAST END LIBRARY instead of Calvary Baptist Church. The ride will end downtown. If you downloaded the ride before 1:30 pm on Wednesday, the route has now been modified to avoid a road closure on Speedvale.

Ladies! If you haven’t joined us for a women’s ride yet, you’re missing out. Come for the cycling, and stay for the socializing and the supportive environment. We will most likely ride as one group but could split into two depending on turnout.

Check back here for a weather decision no later than 5:30 pm. The last time I was the women’s ride leader I cancelled the ride based on bad weather that never materialized. I hope not to repeat that mistake!

Women Only Ride Canteen Edition | June 22, 6:30PM

Well, the weather has not been cooperating with our Women’s Rides, but we hope to make up for that with our first Special Edition Women Only Ride! We’ll be starting and finishing this ride at our sponsor, Fixed Gear’s, Canteen, 5 Edinburgh Rd S, so that we can enjoy some post-ride time together. Thanks to the Ministry of Heritage, Sports, Tourism and Culture’s and Ontario Cycling’s Member Club Rebuild funding, the club will foot the bill for some pizza and bevvies.

It’s going to be warm, and that patio will be beckoning, so we’ll keep this ride fairly short – see the map below. We will ride together as one group, unless we get a huge turnout and a few women are chomping at the bit (be sure to load the route if you think you might want to breakaway!). I’ll bring my car and park there, so you can lock some post-ride clothes in it if so desired. There’s a tiny bit of gravel trail on the route, but it’s nicely hard-packed.

As always, if the weather is looking iffy, check back here for possible cancellation no later than 5:30 PM.

CANCELLED Women Only Ride | May 25th 6:30PM

Ride Cancelled. Where did that darn rain come from? There’s not going to be a lot, but enough to make riding unpleasant. We’ll try and schedule another women’s ride before the next two weeks pass – keep your eyes on the website!

Let’s keep the great vibes from our inaugural GCC Women Only Ride rolling! We might lose the sun by ride time, but it’ll still be warm – come out and join us before the rain comes!

It looks like a beautiful night for our inaugural GCC Women only ride! Being as this is our first one, let’s plan on a very social ride so that we can all get acquainted. We’ll all ride together at the speed everyone is comfortable with, and chatting is required.
