Sunday Gravel Ride | Nov 17th 11:00 AM

The weather is cooperating for another November Sunday gravel ride. I’m keeping it short again, so we don’t get too chilled, and so that we’re well rested for the evening’s Annual Meeting and Social. I’ve Included some little loops of some of my favourite nearby gravel bike friendly trails. No coffee stop on this one.

Load the route on your bike computer if you have one, here’s how.

Disclaimer: Depending on rider turn out, some Speed Groups may have to be combined.

Sunday Gravel Ride October 13 9AM RIDE ON

WE ARE A GO! LOOKS LIKE SOME LIGHT RAIN POSSIBLE EARLY ON BUT GOING TO GAMBLE AND GIVE IT A GO. THROW THOSE LAYERS ON AND LETS HAVE SOME FUN! Thanksgiving weekend around town ramble! I’m hoping that this will allow folks the opportunity to get in a fun ride and to duck out when turkey calls! Some familiar trails and hopefully something new, this route will cover some of the best inner city trails Guelph has to offer and allow us to enjoy the autumn splendor. The forecast is not looking great, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed and will only cancel if it’s looking terrible (I’ll have two turkey dinners in me to burn!). Please note the early 9am start. It may be a little chilly but I’m hoping the early start will allow more people to join and still make later commitments. Check back Sunday morning for a final call on the weather.

Bring money for a coffee stop. Tail lights are a good idea.

Cancelled: Sunday Road Tours | October 13

Due to poor sign up and the cold and wet forecast I have cancelled the road ride for October 13th. If you are still itching to ride this Sunday, check out our gravel option.

The route this weekend is a loop around the outskirts of Guelph. The idea is that this will give you the option to head back home at whatever point which suits you depending on your Thanksgiving Day plans. My hope was that this would entice a few more out for at least part of the ride. Bring money for a coffee stop in Hespeler and tail lights are a good idea.

BIGMTB Ride | Sept 29th 9:30

GCC’s Jim Brogden presents the 2024 BIGMTB!

Jim has led the development of the Arkell Spring Grounds with fellow GCC and GORBA club members.

The Ride starts at GCC’s sponsor Flow State Bike Co. in Arkell.

These are ‘Ride Leader’ led rides.

There are two ride groups: Advanced & Intermediate.

Groups will separate based on ability and be assigned to ride groups at Flow State.

The Rides will include Arkell Spring Grounds, Smith Property and Guelph Lake.

There is a supported rest stop on the west side of Watson Rd just south of Stone.

Afterwards, riders will head to our sponsor Fixed Gear on Alma Rd. for refreshments and food.

As required by the city of Guelph, you must be a GORBA member ($40) or buy a ‘Day Pass’ ($10) to ride the Arkell trails. It’s quite a reasonable annual contribution to keep these trails open and maintained. How much does a bike tire cost? A GORBA Membership is the cheapest part of your riding season. No more excuses, get your GORBA membership here today!

This is a GCC and GORBA combined event.

Sunday Road Tours | Sept 29 8AM

For those of you who either don’t have a mountain bike or are afraid of trees, we have a road ride for you this Sunday! Since the winds will be coming from the NE, we’ll head out in that direction towards Belfountain so we can take advantage of the fabled “tailwind” for the ride back. The route will be mostly familiar but with a few minor tweaks to explore a few different roads you’ve likely never ridden before. There might be a good reason for that, but you never know! Both Grand Tour and Tour riders will ride together until Limehouse. Bring money for a coffee stop in Belfountain and tail lights are a good idea.

The weather right now is calling for cloudy skies and temperatures in the high teens with a decent wind out of the NE. The current forecast calls for overnight rain, but it should be done well before we ride. Hopefully, the remnants of Hurricane Helene doesn’t change things. Keep an eye on this space for any updates.

Sunday Gravel Ride | September 22 8:00

Sunday is looking to still be part of this mini-heat wave we’re having, so it should be warm enough to ride by 8. A slightly shorter route but Elora has an amazing coffee shop (or two), so my default will be to stop for a quick coffee.

We haven’t been down to Valens for a while, plus it’s time to test your late season punchy hill skills on the LaFarge trail! Should be a beautiful day. Lots of fun friendly trail on this route. Scott is the ride leader. There may still be a food truck in Valens, but bring a snack for a quick break there just in case. There will also be a stop just after coming out of Puslinch at the Little Lake Market (km 69), where you can drink a very expensive latte. Bring some money.

Sunday Road Tours | September 15 @ 8:00am

Weather looks great for the plans this Sunday. The Tour and GT will start together from the Y on Downey but we will split at the bottom of Townline at Avenue Road. The Tour will noodle through Cambridge over to Elgin, then head south, through the little train underpass and eventually hit Cheese Factory Rd (beauty). They’ll head across to Ayr for a stop at Tim’s.
At the Tour/GT split, the GT will head down to Sheffield and make their way down to Paris for coffee at Wincey Mill. The GT will then make its way up to Ayr where both groups routes will re-connect for the return passed the old Pioneer Tower. Bring money for a coffee stop and tail lights are a good idea.

Load the route on your bike computer if you have one, here’s how. Be sure to pay close attention to the route through Doon Valley Golf/Walter Bean Trail and over to the right turn onto the foot path from Deer Ridge to connect to Pioneer Tower Rd and Maplegrove Rd.

BIG100 2024 | September 8th

Imperial & Metric Century Rides!

The GCC road ride of the year with local beer and gourmet wood oven pizza to top it off!

It’s time to see how your fitness has progressed throughout the season. Or you can just come along for another Sunday ride, you decide what this will be for you.

There are two century distances to choose, 100 miles (160km) or 100 kilometres. Each with multiple speed groups.

Riders should lower their personal expected speed average for these longer rides from what they might be used to on a TAM Ride.

This event is limited to 50 club members as per the capacity of Fixed Gear Brewing Alma location. Sign up early to make sure you get a spot!

Below is the departure schedule for each speed group based on expected speed average. Please choose wisely and responsibly.

Two routes have been carefully prepared and scouted. There will be a rest station along the way and we will be riding some not often travelled roads! Please be aware that there will be some short, unpaved sections on both routes.

Ride is unsupported – you must be prepared to fix your bike or make your own way home in the event of a breakdown.

The Details:

  • The BIG100 is open to GCC Club Members only
  • Rides start and end at Fixed Gear Brewing, with a free beer at the end for participants. Water & soft drinks are also available
  • Rain or shine (unless very bad weather or warnings issued by EC)
  • Free parking and gear storage at Fixed Gear Brewing, arrive well before your start time if you want to stow some gear.
  • Multiple pace groups per distance (see above)
  • Staggered start to finish at a similar time
  • There are a few short, unpaved sections in both imperial and metric century routes. They have been ridden recently on road tires. 23s and larger will suffice. There are also a few short, busy sections that can’t be avoided. Single file in those busy areas is suggested.
  • There is a GCC, volunteer supported, rest stop in Wellesley for both routes and a second, paid stop in Elora for the 160 groups.
  • Post ride food provided by our incredible sponsor Fixed Gear Brewing
  • Door Prizes from Speed River Bicycle and Paramount Sports
  • Bring cash or card for additional post ride bevies
  • Pace group adjustments may occur subject to popularity
  • Make certain your bike is tuned up and in good condition for your ride
  • Ride is unsupported – be prepared to make your own way home in the event of a breakdown
  • Participants must pre-register to allow for food prep

Both routes share the first, volunteer supported, rest stop in Wellesley, where we will have some great snacks and water waiting. The 160K has a second paid rest stop in Elora, bring some cash for that.

Sunday Gravel Ride | Aug 25 8:00am

We’re resurrecting the original route from the modified Super Sunday Gravel Ride. I wasn’t around, but apparently the weather was expected to be worse to the north of Guelph than the south, so a different route was used. We’re not going to have that problem this Sunday! We’ll take a break in Alma for some snacks and refreshments before making our way to the Covered Bridge and the G2G trail for the ride home.

Sunday Road Tours | August 25 8:00 AM

NOTE: The Grand Tour start location is the Hasty Market on Victoria Rd and Arkell Rd, and The Tour will start at the church at Arkell and Watson. Both start at 8:00AM.

John L’s fantastic plan for last weekend was stifled by both weather and vacations, so I’m going to give it another go this week. This time the weather is looking pretty much perfect; we probably wont even need layers for the early start, but double check in the morning to be sure. To reiterate, the Grand Tour is going to be on the long side. Bring lots of fuel for the ride – most of us don’t consume enough calories on these longer rides.

The plan is for both tours to head down to Waterdown. The Tour can make a rest stop at the Copper Kettle before making their way back to Guelph. The Grand Tour will continue down Snake Rd to North Shore along the Hamilton Harbour Bay before starting some of the return climbs. First up is King Rd back to Waterdown, then 14th up the escarpment in Milton. Should be a beauty. The GT is a shade on the long side for a Sunday, so officially, it starts from the Hasty Market at Victoria Rd and Arkell Rd and ends in Arkell. Bring money for Fritters at our coffee stop and tail lights are a good idea.
