Tuesday, June 23, 4:30 PM at Guelph City Hall
Please plan on attending the Guelph Junction Railway Annual Meeting this coming Tuesday, June 23, 4:30PM at Guelph City Hall.
This meeting is fundamental to the completion of the G2G and the continued existence of the Guelph Radial and Aqueduct Trails.
Guelph Radial and Aqueduct Trails
Late last year, without public consultation, the GJR shut down the Radial and Aqueduct Trails below the old Turf Grass Institute. The GJR installed signs saying they were not trails. This is contrary to all history and official city documentation. The Guelph Hiking Trail Club was founded upon in these trails in 1970. The Trails are on private land that GHTC has agreements with. GCC riders and the community use them more than the adjacent roads (Propulso phone data). GJR requested users to cross the train tracks at Stone Road without providing any detours. Rail crossing at roads are where rail injuries and deaths occur in Guelph. That is completely unacceptable. A detour is not what is needed, a safe crossing on a century old trail is. A crossing has been asked for for years. Nothing has been done. The GJR wants these trails gone. They will hamper the installation of sidings in the area. The GJR has admitted to “staking and locating” more rail sidings in this Natural Heritage and Floodplain area. GCC delegates and others will be asking for a formal and safe crossing for these trails. Without clear support from the public, this may not happen.
G2G (Guelph to Goderich Trail)
With the cooperation of the city-owned Guelph Junction Railway (GJR), the G2G could have been finished years ago. As this project was not undertaken by city staff, a community group (including GCC members) have taken on the project as a ‘Community Led’ initiative. GCC and other delegates will be there to ensure this project gets the support necessary to see it to completion. Again, without clear support from the public, this may not happen.
Please come out and support the delegations to get the G2G gap completed and the Radial and Aqueduct trails re-opened and their future permanently secured with a proper, safe and long overdue crossing.
Your presence makes a difference.
The city is losing trails through decisions by people who don’t use them, have other plans and motives.
Please plan to attend.
