Sunday Road Tours | Sept 29 8AM

For those of you who either don’t have a mountain bike or are afraid of trees, we have a road ride for you this Sunday! Since the winds will be coming from the NE, we’ll head out in that direction towards Belfountain so we can take advantage of the fabled “tailwind” for the ride back. The route will be mostly familiar but with a few minor tweaks to explore a few different roads you’ve likely never ridden before. There might be a good reason for that, but you never know! Both Grand Tour and Tour riders will ride together until Limehouse. Bring money for a coffee stop in Belfountain and tail lights are a good idea.

The weather right now is calling for cloudy skies and temperatures in the high teens with a decent wind out of the NE. The current forecast calls for overnight rain, but it should be done well before we ride. Hopefully, the remnants of Hurricane Helene doesn’t change things. Keep an eye on this space for any updates.

Load the route on your bike computer if you have one, here’s how.

All rides need a minimum of 3 members signed up in order to officially run. If a ride has the required number of riders, but no Group Captain riding with them, that group ride will be considered cancelled. The group can decide among themselves to hold an ‘unofficial’ ride and follow the route. All group riders take it upon themselves to know the route and are responsible for their own safety.

Ride groups will be:

BIG100 2024 | September 8th

Imperial & Metric Century Rides!

The GCC road ride of the year with local beer and gourmet wood oven pizza to top it off!

It’s time to see how your fitness has progressed throughout the season. Or you can just come along for another Sunday ride, you decide what this will be for you.

There are two century distances to choose, 100 miles (160km) or 100 kilometres. Each with multiple speed groups.

Riders should lower their personal expected speed average for these longer rides from what they might be used to on a TAM Ride.

This event is limited to 50 club members as per the capacity of Fixed Gear Brewing Alma location. Sign up early to make sure you get a spot!

Below is the departure schedule for each speed group based on expected speed average. Please choose wisely and responsibly.

Two routes have been carefully prepared and scouted. There will be a rest station along the way and we will be riding some not often travelled roads! Please be aware that there will be some short, unpaved sections on both routes.

Ride is unsupported – you must be prepared to fix your bike or make your own way home in the event of a breakdown.

The Details:

  • The BIG100 is open to GCC Club Members only
  • Rides start and end at Fixed Gear Brewing, with a free beer at the end for participants. Water & soft drinks are also available
  • Rain or shine (unless very bad weather or warnings issued by EC)
  • Free parking and gear storage at Fixed Gear Brewing, arrive well before your start time if you want to stow some gear.
  • Multiple pace groups per distance (see above)
  • Staggered start to finish at a similar time
  • There are a few short, unpaved sections in both imperial and metric century routes. They have been ridden recently on road tires. 23s and larger will suffice. There are also a few short, busy sections that can’t be avoided. Single file in those busy areas is suggested.
  • There is a GCC, volunteer supported, rest stop in Wellesley for both routes and a second, paid stop in Elora for the 160 groups.
  • Post ride food provided by our incredible sponsor Fixed Gear Brewing
  • Door Prizes from Speed River Bicycle and Paramount Sports
  • Bring cash or card for additional post ride bevies
  • Pace group adjustments may occur subject to popularity
  • Make certain your bike is tuned up and in good condition for your ride
  • Ride is unsupported – be prepared to make your own way home in the event of a breakdown
  • Participants must pre-register to allow for food prep

Both routes share the first, volunteer supported, rest stop in Wellesley, where we will have some great snacks and water waiting. The 160K has a second paid rest stop in Elora, bring some cash for that.

Sunday Road Tours | August 25 8:00 AM

NOTE: The Grand Tour start location is the Hasty Market on Victoria Rd and Arkell Rd, and The Tour will start at the church at Arkell and Watson. Both start at 8:00AM.

John L’s fantastic plan for last weekend was stifled by both weather and vacations, so I’m going to give it another go this week. This time the weather is looking pretty much perfect; we probably wont even need layers for the early start, but double check in the morning to be sure. To reiterate, the Grand Tour is going to be on the long side. Bring lots of fuel for the ride – most of us don’t consume enough calories on these longer rides.

The plan is for both tours to head down to Waterdown. The Tour can make a rest stop at the Copper Kettle before making their way back to Guelph. The Grand Tour will continue down Snake Rd to North Shore along the Hamilton Harbour Bay before starting some of the return climbs. First up is King Rd back to Waterdown, then 14th up the escarpment in Milton. Should be a beauty. The GT is a shade on the long side for a Sunday, so officially, it starts from the Hasty Market at Victoria Rd and Arkell Rd and ends in Arkell. Bring money for Fritters at our coffee stop and tail lights are a good idea.

SUPER SUNDAY – All Members | Aug 11th

GRAVEL ROUTE CHANGES! There is a greater chance of rain in the north, so we’ll go south. Load the new routes at the bottom of this post.

Here’s another club event where all members can participate in their desired speed group in gravel or road riding, starting and finishing at the same place for everyone with a post-ride gathering!

Come one, come all… come out and join the fun!

The event starts and finishes at our club sponsor ‘Fixed Gear Brewing’ on Alma Street.

There are several start times, 8:00AM & 9:00AM depending on your group, please NB.

Ride Leaders for each group have posted their route maps, see below.

The club is footing the bill for pizza and one beer per club rider. Non alcoholic bevies will also be available.

If you want to bring a change of clothes for afterwards, those departing at 8 AM can stash their gear in Fixed Gear and those departing as 9 AM can store gear in Dejan K’s car.

It takes a team to put these events on, so let’s send our thanks to those who are helping with this one! Erik H for coordinating with Fixed Gear; Christopher L for creating the R1-4 routes and leading the R3-4 groups; Drew E for creating the R5-8 routes and leading R5; Kevin B and Lorenz C for getting the word out; Lorenz for pulling this post together (and creating the Super Sundays in the first place!); Meg T for making and managing the to-do list; Meg and Lorenz for creating the gravel routes and leading G1 and G3.

Load your route on your bike computer if you have one, here’s how. Note that we don’t have group captains pre-assigned for R1&2, R6-8 or G2, so it’s especially important that those participants have the route loaded.

If necessary due to low signup numbers, some groups will be combined.

GCC 300 | Sunday July 21, 2024 5:00AM

THIS IS A VERY LONG DISTANCE RIDE. PLEASE READ EVERYTHING IN DETAIL

Lunch and Coffee stops are available on route.

This will be the finale to the GCC randonneuring events for 2024, a 300km ride on July 21! You must have completed one of the previous 200km events, or completed a 200km on your own this year. If you don’t meet this requirement but are still interested, contact me and we can discuss.

We’ll be starting at The Boathouse, so there will NOT be a pre-ride bag drop. The group will leave at 5AM sharp, so it is recommended you arrive by 4:45am to get your gear in order. Bring money for coffee and lunch stops, bonking on this ride will not be a fun time. Tail lights are mandatory to be running until 7am, but really you should run them the whole time.

Food is paramount when riding distances like this. Do not skip out on an opportunity to eat at one of the stops, you will have a much nicer time if you are well fueled.

Please review the course and prepare accordingly. There are a few busy roads that we will be on for short periods (ride single file). There will also be some mild gravel sections to avoid the busiest roads.

Load the route on your bike computer if you have one, here’s how.

The only difference between the short and long loops is the trip down Concession 11 (which may look boring but it is actually a very nice rolling bit of gravel road) – pick your distance below!

**CANCELED** Sunday Road Tours | June 30 08:00

I guess in between the long weekend, kids home from school, and a couple groups riding in far flung locations, our sign-ups are lacking. Enjoy the long weekend in your own ways, although preferably still on a bike 😉

School’s out for summer! School’s out for ever!! Err- okay maybe not, Alice, but living in the moment for a couple hours on a summer morning can temporarily make it feel like forever. I’m shamelessly reposting routes from a few weeks back that got cancelled due to weather. Also, I don’t head that direction very often so there’s some self-interest here (thanks Robert M 🙏).

“This week the Grand Tour will head out to The Forks of the Credit, with a coffee stop in Belfountain. The Tours will stop for a coffee at Kit’s Little Kitchen on Main Street in Glen Williams, and will turn back towards Guelph after the sweet gravel climb on 10th Line beside Terra Cotta. Bring money for the coffee stop and tail lights are a good idea.”

Ride Cancelled due to thunderstorm risk

We are supporting the Tour de Guelph’s Hospital Fundraiser by signing up, paying our money (fund raise and donate more if you can) and riding our bikes. There will be no other club rides this day.

The TdG has several routes to choose from. Some are good for getting your family and friends out on their bikes. You may choose what you like however, We have selected the 100 km route to ride together as a club in several speed groups.

There are supported rest stops with food and water (we probably won’t stop at them all).

Visit GCC’s Tour de Guelph page on how to sign up. And have you heard? Tail lights are a good idea.

Arrive early enough to get your arm band from registration – 7:10 ish.

There are four Speed Groups to choose from (not mandatory).  Groups may be combined as needed upon rider numbers.

Sunday Road Tours | May 5, 2024 at CANCELLED

***UPDATE*** – Apologies for late notice. Not enough riders signed up for this one and it’s not looking like the greatest weather for a long one. This ride is officially CANCELLED, but for those who remain signed up, feel free to head out on your own for an unofficial road ride.
This Sunday the Grand Tour and medium option will start from the Guelph YMCA.
We’ll plan to head SW to Seaton Road. The Grand Tour will continue toward Glen Morris with a little new road to explore (well … new to me). Both routes will head back home up Foreman and offer a refuel stop at the 97 Station (tarts are great, but hope you’re not craving a Cuppa Joe – may wanna go for a cold fill here lol). The route continues toward home via Gore Rd and the Berg. We’ll officially end the ride in Arkell, but the route length includes heading back into Guelph to The Boathouse. Bring money for a coffee stop and tail lights are a good idea.

PS .. the sign-up link defaults to the Library, but we are meeting/starting from the Guelph Y.

Sunday Road Tours | April 28 9:00AM

RIDE IS ON!!! There’s rain forecasted around 11am. We’re rolling out as planned, but may shorten the ride to avoid getting too wet. 60-70k is better than no K. Also, Kevin bought a fancy new rain jacket he wants to try out.

It’s Paris/Ancaster weekend, and its going to be amazingly warm with temperatures in the mid-20’s. However, mud sucks so we’re doing our own ride that won’t wreck our precious bikes. We’ll start from the YMCA on Kortright. We’ll skirt the edge of Cambridge and down to Ayr. We’ll stop at Timmy’s for a break before the return ride home. The SW wind should give us a nice push! The Medium ride length is only 11k shorter than the Grand Tour this week and the breakpoint is well past the half-way point near Cambridge. I imagine people won’t mind so much with the warm weather.

The group can decide among themselves to hold an ‘unofficial’ ride and follow the route. All group riders take it upon themselves to know the route and are responsible for their own safety.
